Betfair has 2 main advantages over other betting websites:

1) Generally you get higher odds. This is because you're betting against other people not against the betting agent because of this the odds are not weighted in the favour of the bookie

2) You can bet for (Bet) and against (Lay) outcomes, you can use this to your advantage by betting and laying (therefore covering all outcomes) at different Odds to give you profit no matter what the outcome

Two of the most commonly use techniques for football game betting are Laying the Draw and Laying on the 1.5 over/under goals market

Laying the Draw

Once the game starts you'll notice that the Odds will constatnly change, the Odds for Home Win and Away Win slowly drift upwards and the Odds for a Draw drift downwards, then when the first goal goes in the Draw odds shoot up, the scoring team win Odds go down and the other team Odds go up.

So what we want to do here is begin by laying the draw (which is betting that the final result will not be a draw)

Lets look at an International game (England v Denmark)

I find the best time to do this is when the odds have drifted down to the around 2 (Even Money), this is usually between the 60/70 min, with this game there were 2 early goals (score 1-1) so I've waited until the Draw lay odds are down to 2 then put my bet on

I've set my Backer's Odd to 2 so this bet will only become valid when the Lay odds (currently at 2.32) drift down to 2, as you can see I'll lose £10 if the final result is a Draw and win £10 (minus 5%) if either England or Denmark win.

So now we want a goal (which comes along via Ashley Young in the 68th minute) now lets look at the odds

You can see that the goal has cause the Draw odds to go up (5.1) so now we have a few options available depending on what you think is the most likely outcome of the game

If you think that there's no chance England will lose you can just left the bet as is

If you think that England will probably win but don't want to risk losing you're £10 (via a late Denmark equaliser) you can do as above and bet £2.50 on the Draw which cancels out your potential lose and gives you a win/win situation

If you think that denmark will probably go on to score an equaliser you can bet you're potential £10 win on the draw

This again give you a non-loss situation (basically a free bet on the Draw outcome)

Or finally you can equaliser you're profit, which reduces it but spreads it over all outcomes

If it looks like the goal may not come you can equalise you loss also, the below game (Turkey v South Korea) is a game that I layed the Draw (at odds of 1.8)

Laying on the 1.5 over/under goals market

Football is all about goals which is what this market is all about, you tend to bet with you heart rather than you're head when beting on results, this is why this market is a good one, our betting strategy is similar to Laying the Draw, we start by betting that there will be more than 1.5 goals, the good thing about this market is that the Odds move very quickly they usually start quite low but get round to 2 (Even money) by about the 35-40 minute

Let take a look a the Manchester United v Manchester City game, I've waited until the odds are up to 2 then put my bet on

Then within minutes Nani scores and I've equalised my bet

In a perfect betting game you can use both these techniques together, start by betting 1.5 or more goals then each team scores (you win bet) then you can lay the draw and one of the teams scores a winning goal (you win that bet also)

The 0-0 Draw is your worst enemy with these bets so you'll need to choose you games carefully, when betting on 1.5 goals or more you've also got the opportunity to equalise your losses if it looks like the second goal may not come

You can also use the Bet/Lay technique on the Correct Score market for games that look like they're end up 1-1 (which quite often happens when the top teams play each other), you start by betting 1-1 then lay this when the first goal goes in

Another technique to effectively Insurance against a late goal is to lay your winning bet late in the game, the odds become so low that the cost of covering your loss using you're profit is next to nothing
